Spell resistance (SR) is a special defensive ability. When a spell (that has a spell resistance check) is cast against a creature with spell resistance, the caster rolls a die (with the modifiers described below). If the roll is less than the the creature’s spell resistance, then the spell does not affect that creature. Spell resistance is like armor against magical attacks.

Spell resistance does not stack -- only the highest SR item or spell counts.

The roll to beat spell resistance is

  • Caster level + 1d20 + spell penetration.

The spell penetration modifier is plus 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 for Spell Penetration, Greater Spell Penetration, Epic Spell Penetration, Legendary Spell Penetration and Paragon Spell Penetration respectively, these are not combined values and only the maximum counts.

Certain classes may get a boost to spell penetration (PM's when using certain Necromany or Illusion spells) and there is an Ego augment (Raja's) and the Sigil of Mystra artifact that can also add to this value.

Taking non-caster levels on a primary caster build can harm your ability to breach spell resistance so do this with caution if you are planning on affecting end game creatures with your spells.

The spell resistance from the spell spell resistance is

  • Caster level + 12.

The Spell resistance for a monk (from the feat Diamond Soul) is

  • Monk level + 10 + improvements.

At Character level 41 and up, monk spell resistance begins to increase at an accelerated rate if the character's control class is monk. The increased progression is 10 + 7/6s the character's total monk and Legendary Levels. Improved Spell Resistance feats still add two to this total per feat. Unlike the spell resistance from the Diamond Soul feat, this SR can be temporarily lowered by Mordenkainen's Disjunction, Greater Spell Breach, Lesser Spell Breach, Nature's Balance and/or Nature's Frailty.

The improvements modifier is 2 for every Improved Spell Resistance feat taken.

The Spell Resistance for a level 20 Red Dragon Disciple with Epic Toughness 5 is
