The Rowan's Guardian guards the Rowan Tree in the Town of Ascension. He can tune the tree's spirit with one's own, so that:

1. Level 1 characters can level their character to level 2 or 3, depending on class
2. You can destroy your character, deleting it from the server vault
3. You can save your character, something you can do three times a day with your Saving Pen
4. You can shackle your character to a lower level than you currently are. This allows you to join parties of lower levels, and also, allows for certain runs to drop loot that it would otherwise not (i.e. 54 is the max level for Toyshop to drop a Portable Hole. Note that reducing your level to lower than 55 will reduce your demi rank to 0 will and cost you an additional 2 points of AB and DC and reduce your abilities by 4 for ability checks. Shackling to level 40 will remove immortality and whilst this will enable completion of the tags requiring no immortal assistance it may be worth completing some of the more tricky ones (Ancient Kings comes to mind) whilst you are level 40 and immortal before taking level 41. Shackling may affect your ability to use items in your possession. NOTE: Shackling is NOT available for use by Hardcore (-HC-) characters as part of the process technically kills your character.
