Overview

  • The Hells, Oinos, The Abyss & Limbo have an environment effect that reduces player's status
  • In general the deeper you venture in Hells and Abyss the worse the penalties become with Limbo part 2 hard mode being at the maximum 13 layer effect.
    • This effect also affects player's pets and summons.

Penalty modifiers

  • There are various feats and accomplishments that can reduce the deleterious effect of environmental penalties as noted below.
  • The paragon feat "Environmental Adaptivity" reduces this penalty by 1, up to 3 times as well.
  • Half-Molydeus subrace also grants reduces this penalty by 1, stacking with other effects.
  • Abyss Prince win x1 -1 layer penalty
  • Abyss Prince win x2 -1 layer penalty
  • Abyss Prince win x3 -1 layer penalty
  • Abyss Prince win x4 -1 layer penalty
  • Abyss Prince win x5 -1 layer penalty
  • Limbo hard mode - Part 2 (Ssendam tag) -1 layer penalty
  • Mechanus hard mode (not yet implemented) -1 layer penalty
  • Whilst the stacking penalty reduction with all feats and accomplishments adds up to a total of -10 you will still receive penalties equivalent to those in Avernus, it is worth noting that (currently at least) the greatest penalty reduction you can benefit from is 8 layers so if you have the three paragon feats and five Abyss prince wins completing Limbo part two in hard mode will grant no additional benefit. It has not been confirmed whether this is intentional or not.

Greater Restoration

  • The only way to remove all Hell penalties at once is using CL 41+ Greater Restoration, although this only lasts 4-6 rounds (+50% if extended).
  • Characters with more than 21 rogue levels and Skill Mastery will have their skill penalties reduced or even removed.
  • The usable artifact Tymora's Lucky Charm can also be used once per rest to remove the penalties for 1 minute, which is very useful when you are resurrected.
  • The Belt of Eternal Preservation can also provide some Greater Restoration, as long as you rest wearing one.
  • The Druid spell Font of Purification can be very helpful especially when cast from a character with Legendary Spell Focus Abjuration as this can constantly restore all players in the area of effect.

AB penalties

The penalty is applied to the magical bonus, so the following effects can recover it:

AC penalties

In order to recover lost dodge AC you can use:

Damage Immunity Penalties

  • The elemental immunity penalty is less severe than the physical one and can be countered by Druid's Epic Spell Elemental Shunt.
  • The physical damage immunity severely cripples character who doesn't rely on Armor Class at all, unless they can be under the constant effect of Greater Restoration.
  • Critical strikes (mostly the natural 20) are very dangerous under high layer penalty.
  • Damage resistance is NOT affected by penalties therefore items with high resistances can be very useful to limit the damage penalty from any sources.

Skill Penalties

  • Given how the engine works, this reduction is calculated after the magical bonus (which is capped at +50) effectively reducing the maximum bonus a player can have.
    • Skill points invested during Paragon Levels in the corresponding skill will reduce this penalty.
    • Having a skill value over 127 (engine cap) also offset the penalties, but you need a high Stat modifier and Skill focus and/or Epic Skill Focus feats to break the cap. Legendary skill focus doesn't work as it is considered a magical bonus and is therefore included in the cap.
